History Built new as Sunset Timber Co. No.1, Raymond, WA; Note: This is one of only two 85 ton, 3-truck Heislers ever built. Heisler No. 1 By C. G. Heimerdinger, Jr. The 85-ton Heisler was built in 1913 (sn 1272) for Dempsey Lumber Company. It became No. 103 when it was on the Pacific & Eastern Railway in Raymond, Washington; then, still numbered as 103, it went to Puget Sound & Willa Harbor Railway. The Standard Lumber Company of Hackamore, California acquired the locomotive and renumbered it as No. 1, then finally sold it to Standard Lumber Company of Standard, California which became the Pickering Lumber Company in 1918. The locomotive was rebuilt around 1955, but never returned to service because Pickering converted to diesel power in 1956. In the late 1950s, No. 1 was acquired by Mr. Richard O'Kane and moved to Monterey, California with thoughts of a tourist operation, which never came to pass. It was finally donated to the Pacific Locomotive Association in about 1986. It is currently in storage in the Niles area of Fremont, California near its identical twin, the Pickering Heisler No. 5, which the PLA also owns. Today the Number 1 and Number 5 await a move to Niles Canyon. |
